Biography Born in Bloemfontein in 1892, J.R.Tolkien was orphaned in childhood, brought up in near poverty and almost thwarted in adolescent romance. He served in the First World War, surviving the Battle of the Somme, where he lost some of his closest friends, and returned to the academic life, eventually becoming Merton Professor of English at Oxford. Then suddenly his life changed dramatically. One day while marking essay papers he found himself writing 'In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit' - and worldwide renown awaited him.
His books have been translated into over 24 languages and have sold many millions of copies world-wide. He was awarded a CBE, and an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Oxford University in 1972. He died in 1973 at the age of 81. (from Tolkien.co.uk) Books The Silmarillion The Hobbit The Fellowship of The Ring The Two Towers The Return of The King | |||||||||||||||
